1. Schedule a cleaning time

The reason that so many of us have dirty, untidy desks is that we let it build up. For weeks we'll sit there and watch as the dust, grime and clutter develops around us, without even thinking about cleaning up. Then one day it suddenly becomes too much, and you've got a massive job on your hands to get it clean and tidy. A good way to avoid this common situation is by making time in your schedule to clean and tidy your work area. Depending on how dirty and messy you are, this could be once a month, once a week, or once a day, but the main thing is to make sure that you stick to it. Cleaning little and often is better than it taking two hours once every two months.

2. Keep some cleaning wipes in your drawers

The main excuse people use for not cleaning their work area frequently is that there's never any cleaning materials near their desk - well, it doesn't have to be that way. Try keeping a set of cleaning wipes or some anti-bacterial spray in your desk drawer, so that you are able to quickly clean up any spills or stains as soon as they occur. Having cleaning materials nearby will also help you stick to your cleaning schedule that we discussed in the first point - it's a win win!

3. Don't eat at your desk

Not eating at your desk is a good idea for a number of reasons. As well as ensuring that you take a proper lunch break and rest your eyes, it will also mean that your desk won't be covered in food crumbs, leftovers and stains. Eat in the lunch room, or if it's sunny, take your food outside! You'll notice that you feel happier after a break from your work, and that your desk doesn't need to be cleaned as often.
